Season’s greetings,
We hope this finds you and yours happy and healthy as another Christmas and New Year rapidly approach. You are receiving this letter because you are family or among our closest friends. As such, we would like to give you the seasonal update on all things Kanak. Here goes:
First and foremost, Mary Christine and Geno are doing wonderfully. Both are growing bigger and smarter by the day, which has made them a hit at preschool. Mary, though a bit quiet and reserved, is said to be among the sharpest kids in her class. She is very good with her numbers and letters; in fact, Mary can spell a few words already. Like her mommy and daddy, she is definitely a rule follower. Her drawing has come a long way. Her people now have torsos, ears, and hair--we're very excited.
Geno, on the other hand, is a bit more of a free spirit. He is quite a bit more physically advanced than the rest of the babies in his class. Because of this, he often crawls over to their locations and promptly tackles them while trying to give hugs. This lands him in “baby jail,” an exersaucer that keeps him entertained and contained until the workers can give Geno undivided attention and/or move the other babies out of harm’s way. But despite the challenges, Geno’s bright smile and affectionate nature have made him the most popular baby in the building. Often, the workers express genuine disappointment when Angie picks him up for the day.
Speaking of Angie, as expected, she has done a fine job adjusting to life in Texas. She is working at the best school in the area, where she has quickly earned the respect of her students and coworkers. There is no denying the fact that she greatly misses Herscher and all of the wonderful people with whom she worked, but, like a true professional, she has put those feelings on the back burner and poured everything she has into helping her current students. I’ve always know that Angie is a great teacher, but this year has helped remind me of just how wonderful she is in the classroom. She’s a terrific educator, and Mansfield Independent School District and its students are lucky to have her.
As for me, I am doing quite well. My work at USBC has been very well received – as was made evident by the glowingly positive performance review I received in September – and I have made some great friends here. Nothing will ever replace the feeling of being around friends and family back home, but the wonderful people I’ve met here have made the transition as positive as it could possibly be.
So, there you have it, the current State of the Kanaks address. Despite some persistent homesickness that will never fully go away, we are all healthy, happy and very much looking forward to a fun filled Christmas and happy New Year. We hope that you and yours are experiencing the same. Please know that we care about you very much and that you will be on our minds and in our hearts during this special time of year.
